Birmingham Architectural Association competition entry poster design
The Project
BAA's 'Calling All Creatives' is an annual competition, whose theme is 'be inspired by or connected to Birmingham in some way. It could be a homage to its rich history, a reflection of its contemporary culture, or an abstract interpretation of its essence.'
As a relative newcomer to the city, I have been struck by the sheer diversity of the architecture of the city, from the neo-classical columns of the Town Hall, through art deco cinemas, 18th century canalsides, Brutalist 60s icons to the present-day glass and steel wonders of engineering.
Some of the designs are so iconic that I thought it would be fun to see how far I could reduce their appearance and still be recognisable, not unlike the process of designing a logo. Despite not winning, it was a fun project and a departure from my usual work.
